Well, we may have dodged a bullet when Brett Ratner ended up not directing Conan, but it’s not over yet. Ratner, refusing to surrender his dreams of making a movie about a shirtless hulk once played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, has moved on to another mythological hero. According to the LA Times, the shitbag is now in talks to direct a film based on Hercules and what some would call his “legendary” journeys. Producer Avi Lerner has been developing the project for several years but only now, when Clash of the Titans has proved some forgettable 3-D swords and sandals thing can somehow make a ton of money, has it really gotten off the ground. No word on if this will affect Peter Berg’s Hercules project, nor if it will clear up some of the lingering questions we were all left with at the end of Little Hercules in 3-D. One can dream.

Following in the shallow footsteps of a couple pretty unimpressive teasers that still left us sighing, “Jesus, there’s really a Facebook movie…”, a full trailer for The Social Network has at last come online for our judgment. With this preview, director David Fincher seems intent to prove that this film is not about the lighthearted frivolity that comes with “poking” someone. Nor is it even about the sad, sinister motivations of constantly looking at your ex-girlfriend’s profile. This shit is so much more REAL than all that. So real that it must be scored with a choral version of Radiohead’s “Creep” and show new Peter Parker doing math on glass, because Good Will Hunting has shown me that’s something that happens at real Harvard.

On Wednesday, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice started what looks like a pretty grim second stanza for producer Jerry Bruckheimer

this summer. Prince of Persia was not a hit in the US, and worldwide, $325 million seems like a lot of money, but it cost at least that much

when you add in the distribution and marketing.

Sorcerer started pretty slow: $3.7 million yesterday and that puts the five-day weekend estimate around $30 million, if you’re feeling generous.

The rule of thumb this summer has been not to feel generous, since only four or five movies have topped their projections for opening weekend and only

one – Toy Story 3 – has been a true runaway success. The budget for this one is hinted in the $150 million range, so it won’t make money for

Bruckheimer, either.

But then there’s Inception. Our review is coming Friday, of course, but I can tell you that there have probably only been a handful of films in

studio history that are this auspicious. With a $200 million price tag, no true merchandising angle, a near two-and-a-half hour running time, and a convoluted structure that actually adds more layers of complexity as it goes, Inception is one of the least likely summer blockbusters, well, ever. But the gamble should pay off, though perhaps not as wildly as did Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.

Trailers for the film once known simply as the Facebook movie have been coming in quick succession lately. First came a couple brief but somewhat hypnotizing teaser trailers and now we have the first full-length trailer for The Social Network, as it’s more officially known.

The Social Network is directed by David Fincher (Se7en, Fight Club) and is based on the book The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding of Facebook, A Tale of Sex, Money, Genius, and Betrayal by Ben Mizrich.

The new trailer begins by showing off familiar Facebook actions to Radiohead’s “Creep” as sung by a choir. It then moves into the first actual footage from the film, using all of the lines we only heard in the second teaser trailer and putting imagery to it. Everything is wrapped up with some new stuff to remedy any repetition. All-in-all a very solid trailer and well worth the watch. [...]

Columbia has released the first real trailer for David Fincher’s The Social Network. Over the past few weeks we have been given two slightly similar teaser trailers (quite good ones at that). but now we finally get to see the faces behind the dialogue.

Unfortunately for Columbia they can’t advertise The Social Network on Facebook itself as “Facebook’s advertising guidelines don’t allow ads to reference the company unless Facebook has cooperated with the object of the ad.” Although i’m sure the beginning of the trailer will be enough to let people know that it’s about something they probably use on a daily basis.

The film is based on the book “Accidental Billionaires: The Founding of Facebook, A Tale of Sex, Money, Genius, and Betrayal” and stars Jesse Eisenberg as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, Justin Timberlake as Napster founder Sean Parker (who eventually became a Facebook executive) as well as Andrew Garfield (our future Spider-Man), Rooney Mara, Rashida Jones and Max Minghella.

The Social Network will be released on October 1st.

Entertainment Weekly has revealed our first official look at Ryan Reynolds in his Green Lantern costume. The costume itself looks pretty cool, although I’m not feeling the mask. I think I’ll wait to see the costume in action to make a real judgement, as a photoshopped magazine cover isn’t really the way to see it.

We heard back in April that the suit would be fully CGI, and Reynolds has been wearing a grey tracking motion/performance capture suit with led lights while on set.

Green Lantern, directed by Martin Campbell, also stars Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Tim Robbins, Mark Strong and Angela Bassett. Warner Bros. will be releasing the movie in 3D and 2D on June 17th 2011.

Are you guys tired of Mel Gibson phone calls yet?  I never thought I’d say this about a virulently racist lunatic who demands that girls blow him, but I’m getting there.  Anyway, I’ve got today’s tape after the jump.  To me, it’s not even so much what he says, it’s that he can scream about anything for so loud and so long.  I may not be a Hollywood actor, but I don’t think I could summon that kind of rage for the murderer of my children.  It’s kind of incredible.  I bet he goes through three iPhones a month, unless he has one of those salad-bar shields over it.

Former Cavaliers player, and Cleveland hometown hero, LeBron James announced his move to The Miami Heat in South Florida last week via an hour-long ESPN special, The Decision. While some blasted the move as a sign of James’ ever-growing ego, it was made at least somewhat palatable by the fact that all the money made from the program went to charity. The ESPY awards — ESPN’s own sportstastical and somewhat comedic extravaganza — found the funny in the prime-time special they were a key part of and created a spoof with actors Steve Carell and Paul Rudd.

Steve Carell plays himself in the video — filling James’ seat, and Paul Rudd tackles the role of reporter Jim Gray. What follows is three minutes of humor that points out how ridiculous The Decision was in the first place. Carell and Rudd nail the overly serious tone of the original program (honestly, it was a guy signing a basketball contract — it wasn’t Walter Cronkite reporting that JFK had died) while delivering a series of funny moments thanks to Carell’s deadpan delivery. Rudd makes a good straight man for the comedian, but it’s Carell’s presence that really makes the whole thing work. Even obvious jokes (such as the one about “the man upstairs”) are funnier than they should be thanks to Carell’s talents. Plus, the actual “decision” is pretty hysterical too. Hurray for random humor.

The good news is every Alien movie is on its way to Blu-ray this year. The bad news is that does include Alien: Resurrection. According to IGN, Fox is planning to release the Alien Anthology Blu-ray edition, collecting all four films together with masses of special features, right in time for Halloween.

Fox say the edition will find the films ‘reinvigorated for an intense Blu-ray high-definition viewing experience,’ which suggests we’ll likely see the benefits of past remastering efforts rather than a whole new full-scale clean up.

For the princely RRP of $139.99, the edition’s wealth of special features will give you access to content from the ’90s laserdisc edition, the Legacy release and the Quadrilogy. It’ll add up to about 60 hours of extra footage, and more than 12,000 images. We’ll see Sigourney Weaver’s original screen test, an unseen original cut of an Alien 3 making-of and tons of deleted scenes.
